What we consider usable is the function we define, and the rest is decoration. The basic function of a chair is to rest and lean, and it is difficult for us to consider it as a ornamentation; the basic function of a staircase is for people to walk between different floors, and we do not regard it as an ornamentation. However, the columns of ancient Rome were both beautiful and supportive. Compared with modern pillars used for structure, crystal lamps only used for viewing, (picture frames used to mount paintings), people's cognition and definition of each item is more and more
single and clear. Objects with a definite function lose their decorative properties and at the same time lose much of their signifier. Therefore, I hope to rediscover the lost signifier of objects through
ornamentation.First of all, through the investigation of ornamentation in history, we retrieve the
originally diverse meanings of "ornament", and discover the "non-function" that "functional objects" may have. Sort out the relationship between decoration and function, and bring into modern space
thinking. In this way, a building can be designed that can embody a new relationship between function and decoration. Through this building, the observer can rethink the ornament and function in the living space from a different perspective.
